Seminario Bioetica Taoista

Taoist Bioethics Seminar

Beijing - P.R. China

Cina - Prima missione come vice presidente della Federazione Mondiale Taoista (WFD).
(English version below)

China - First mission as vice president of the Taoist World Federation (WFD).
Following up on the 5th Taoist World Forum dedicated to "Taoism in Modernity," I was engaged in a mission from January 17-22 to lay the foundation stone for the establishment of the Taoist Bioethics Committee. This is the first time in the history of Taoism to be confronted with these issues that are so important in today's society.
As soon as I arrived, I was received by Reverend Master Meng Zhiling, secretary-general of the WFD, to whom I explained my project and received his comments and valuable advice.
Then I was in Luyi, a member of the verification committee for the Laozi birth celebrations to be held next March.
Finally, I related my "28 Issues in Bioethics," at the seminar attended by masters and teachers of the Chinese Taoist Academy.
They were discussed in depth, comparing them with our Holy Scriptures, in an atmosphere of great openness and willingness to arrive at a common definition.
Dr. Li Hanying and Dr. Feng He, secretary general and director of the International Department of the Chinese Taoist Association, respectively, presided.
We analyzed the various critical issues but also the potential for Taoism to provide answers and guidance to Taoist practitioners and believers in such a complex and sensitive field as bioethics.
In conclusion, Dr. Li Hanying, to whom I made a gift of my book "Following the Footsteps" (Amazon Ed.), highlighting the scope, the vastness of the topic but especially the importance for Taoist people to have clear answers, substantiated by historical and textual sources, proposed a research project in which to involve Chinese academic institutions and universities as well.
The first step has been taken. The path will be long and arduous but, I am confident that we will achieve the goal, for the good not only of Taoists but for all humanity.

Third Christian-Taoist Colloquium.

Final Statement

We, Christian and Taoist believers and scholars, held the Third Christian-Taoist Colloquium from 11-13 March 2024 in Hong Kong, whose theme was: Cultivating a Harmonious Society through Interreligious Dialogue. In our times, when societies are often marred by conflicts and divisions, our gathering was meant to convey a message to our polarized world: that through respectful and constructive dialogue, we can extinguish the fires of conflict and violence and light a candle of peace and harmony. We are more than ever convinced of the need to continue to talk, walk, and work together. With this goal in mind, we agreed to the following:

1. Encounter: Our dialogue helped us to encounter the sacred mystery of each other through our knowledge about our respective religious writings, rituals, ethics, saints, and sages. Both of our religions, in their own ways, seek to allay the restlessness of the human heart. Therefore, before the inexpressible divine mystery, we need to be open-minded and humble by expanding our minds and hearts.

2. Awaken: Our respective religious patrimonies can prove meaningful if we awaken the spiritual energy in our followers to cultivate a harmonious society. For that to happen, we must recover compassion, justice, simplicity, solidarity, and generosity.

3. Cooperate: Through charitable and educational activities, we can cooperate in building bridges, breaking down walls and sowing seeds of love, respect, and hope.

We express our gratitude to the organizers (the Holy See’s Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, the Hong Kong Taoist Association, and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong) for facilitating this historic encounter. We thank the members of the Hong Kong Taoist Association and the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong for their generous hospitality. Encouraged by this colloquium, we have decided to continue to foster a harmonious society wherever we may be.

1° Consiglio

Federazione Mondiale Taoista

1st Council
World Federation of Daoism

World Federation of Daoism
Operational Plan Suggestions

By Li Xuanzong
1 - Foreword.

Without identity, there is no future. Without a project, a purpose, there is no growthWithout commitment and resources, there is no expansionIf we don’t show us, others cannot know us.
Therefore, we need to set firm points, within which to move,  in order to clearly define:
1.      our identity,
2.      our purposes
3.      how to achieve them.

These fixed points are basically three: Religion, Culture and Society.
Within these three spaces, we need to act outside and inside our  Federation.

Inner & Outer

1 - Outside:

1.      Through Culture: to Promote the Taoist values for a world society in harmony and peace.
2.      Through Religion: to let Recognize the Taoist Religion, cult and worship in the world.

In this way, we can work together with Religions, Universities, Institutions, society, for the Good of Humankind.

2 - Inside:

1.      Unifying Taoist ideology through online courses taught by Chinese Masters whose lectures will be published in Chinese and English.
2.      Creating a Strong sense of identity and belonging, in all members.

ATTENTION

Regarding our Internal Organization, we have a Secretariat that functions excellently.
Regarding the Confederate Associations, we need to create coherence between our Federation's purpose and its diffusion in the various nations.
I believe that, at the moment, there are only two things we need to do to begin to build loyalty in ASSOCIATIONS and their Managers:

1.      ASSOCIATIONS – give them an Annual membership certificates. (pride of membership).
2.      MANAGERS - After they have completed the online course, place them on a worldwide federation registry (pride of responsibility)

To achieve this: We must not confuse doctrine with organization.
Our federation needs managers, not masters.
If we manage it with the mentality of the master-disciple relationship, our federation, having a collective nature, will fail its purposes.
For sure.

How do we achieve our goals?
Through: Religion, Culture and Society.

1 - Religion:

The goals are:
- Let others to know us
- Let us to known ourselves and
- To affirm our Taoist identity among the diversity of other religions.

How to do this?

1 - Outwardly:

Through interfaith dialogue, particularly with Christianity and Islam.
For this I propose an international seminar, Inviting their highest religious authorities.
The theme should be:
"How religions can work with governments for social harmony and avoid wars."
It should be done to Beijing.
The seminars could be placed even next year, in the spring with Christianity and in the fall with Islam.

2 - Inwardly:

Creating a Daoist Academy On Line.
An Institution of higher education for the cultural and religious formation of the Priestly Body.

2 – Culture:

The goal is: - spread the  "Daoist Civilization".

Civilization starts from the Culture.
So I propose 2 actions:

If we want a "Daoist Civilization" in the world, we must spread our values.
First of all, the sanbao. (DDJ, 67)

I propose the establishment of a worldwide San Bao Days.

Once a year, each confederate association, can organize the festival in its own nation.
Involving other Religions, Universities and Associations.
There will be, as example:
2025 - Compassion Day
2026 - Frugality Day
2027 - Humility Day

Building relationships and cooperating with universities to promote Daoist studies.
Especially thinking of the new generation of Chinese language and culture students.

I propose the establishment of a scholarship for college students to promote academic research on Taoism.
Today's students will be tomorrow's professors.
If we help them today, then they will support our purposes tomorrow.

3 – Society:

The goal is: - Create Harmony among nations.

The future of humanity depends:

1.      On the defense of the naturalness of the human person
2.      On the preservation of the environment
3.      On peace among nations.

I am convinced that Our Federation, strong in its Taoist values, can and must play its part in this process.

We must act, be present, in the field of: bioethics, ecology and the environment.
To do this we need authority.
For this we need to be recognized by governments but especially by the UN.

Therefore I propose and request, to start the process of recognition of Our Federation as a humanitarian organization
by the UN.

Conclusion

What I propose for your attention I have already successfully done in Italy but, most importantly, people liked it very much.
These proposals come from my professional experience.
For six years I was general manager of one of the largest sports federations in Italy, under the direct control of the government.
Now I want to put my experience at the service of Our federation.
I know, what I propose requires a great deal of organizational and effort.
But we are the World Federation of Daoismcertainly not a small organization with only two or three members.

Our purpose is:
1 - to spread Daoism all over the world
2 - to bring Harmony among nations.

To conclude:

Today we have a blank sheet of paper. We can fill it with scribbles or paint on it, an immortal work of art.
But above all, we must remember that as we present ourselves to the world, as we act in the world, so it will evaluate us.

Taoist Association of Wudang delegation visit.

The Taoist Church of Italy, while maintaining an absolute ecumenical openness with all Taoist Schools and traditions, has a special bond with the Wudangshan Taoist Association because I personally was initiated into it although my Taoist path later took other directions.
The delegation led by Rev. Master Zhang Yong was welcomed with joy and affection, being part of the same Taoist Family.
Rev. Master Tian Liyang, together with the team, thrilled the audience present with his magnificent display of Taoist martial arts.
We vowed to tighten our ties more and more for the promotion of Taoism.
At the airport in Rome, we all felt sad to see our brothers leave, but we have the hope that next year a delegation from our church will reciprocate the visit and see them again in the beautiful mountains of Wudang.
